Figlie del padre. Passione e autorità nella letteratura occidentale

In the history of Western literature, from the cosmogonic myths and from the biblical texts to the present day, the father / daughter relationship has been variously represented. Figure of power and its changes over time, is a relationship full of ambivalences and contradictions. When women begin to write en masse, and when the absolute patriarchal power begins its long crisis, even the representation begins to change. Daughters often rebel, but just as often they are sacrificed. Paternal domination can be suffocating to the extreme of incest, yet it is often decisive in encouraging daughters to self-reliance. The paternal mandate can be dangerous, especially if the mother is a negative model only. But the Father's law is expressed in many forms, even in literary tradition, and it is neither easy nor automatic to find one's own way.

Nella storia della letteratura occidentale, dai miti cosmogonici e dai testi biblici fino ai nostri giorni, il rapporto padre/figlia è stato variamente rappresentato. Figura del potere e dei suoi mutamenti nel tempo, è un rapporto denso di ambivalenze e contraddizioni. Quando le donne cominciano a scrivere in massa, e quando il potere patriarcale assoluto comincia la sua lunga crisi, anche la rappresentazione comincia a cambiare. Le figlie spesso si ribellano, ma altrettanto spesso sono sacrificate. Il dominio paterno può essere soffocante fino all'incesto, eppure è spesso determinante nell'incoraggiare le figlie all'autonomia. Il mandato paterno può essere pericoloso, specie se la madre è un modello solo negativo. Ma la legge del Padre si esprime in tante forme, anche nella Tradizione letteraria, e non è facile né automatico trovare una propria strada.
